SOTHEBY'S INSTIUTE OF ART

Most of the preparation for the new course, The Future of the Artworld,  at Sotheby's Institute of Art, conceived and lead by Renée Pfister, are completed.

The course comprises eight sessions, each class being 1hrs 30mins, two days a week, starting 17 November 2020. All lectures will be streamed live via Zoom and will enable students to follow along with each lesson in real time.  To avoid online fatigue, Renée has invited two high-profile experts for each class, to contribute their views to her seminars, offering different perspectives and to encourage a lively discourse.

SOLARIS NEXUM - A WORK IN PROGRESS

Recently, Alexandra Carr’s commission Solaris Nexum moved to the production stage. The polycarbonate is being cut, the metalwork hanging system is being made and the bead columns are about to be assembled.  She and her technicians have been busy developing bespoke construction frames, jigs and hanging systems to carefully hold the wire and panels in place so the correct angles and positioning of the panels can be achieved. It's all underway but there are going to be a lot of busy days and long nights in the studio to get Solaris Nexum shipped to Dublin ahead of Brexit. Ms Carr lives in an area which is currently under a local partial lockdown but she is still able to work in her studio. She hopes that she can move into her new house so she can finish making the piece there, to safeguard the production in case of a full lockdown and being shut out of her studio.

COOL VIBES  -  DOMINIC BEATTIE

Dominic Beattie is an artist who is known and admired equally for his ornate vibrant coloured pictorial and spatial representations.

FEMMES FATALES - PIP DICKENS

In her paintings, Pip Dickens employs innovative methods to create unusual surfaces, layers and textures. Depth and surface contrasts are particularly important, and her work draws on many sources. This includes natural phenomena to the darker elements of phantasmagoria, from opacity to transparency, from rhythms within music to pattern structures in nature, from cinematic devices to literary sources. Concerned with visual perception Dickens examines and challenges theories and methodologies of light and movement within the second dimension. Concepts of illusion and double meaning are recurring themes. The notion that we may receive two contrasting visual or intellectual responses to a single stimulant.
