Exhibition Outline
Proposed by: Renée Pfister on behalf of Peter Zimmermann.
Rationale & Current Relevance
The ‘Information Age’, also known as the ‘Computer Age’, the ‘Digital Age’, and the ‘New Media Age’, began in the mid-20th century, marking a rapid transformation in both our professional and personal lives. This shift was driven by technological advancements and the advent of personal computers. Peter Zimmermann was at the forefront of these high-tech innovations, which provided him with the opportunity to revolutionise the way of seeing and experiencing abstract painting in a groundbreaking manner.
The first conceptual painting was created by László Moholy-Nagy in 1922, when he instructed another person over the phone to paint an artwork on his behalf. In contrast, Zimmermann explored the potential of ‘New Media’ by deconstructing images and film stills beyond their original contexts, giving rise to a new visual vernacular. During this phase, he produced cartoon and poster installations, as well as painted book covers, until he began experimenting with resin, a material that transitions from liquid to a solid, homogeneous state. This discovery prompted him to move away from traditional techniques, creating sleek, contemporary works that resonate with today’s conception of the sublime.
Zimmermann wasn't just experimenting with new techniques; he was questioning the very essence of what painting could be. Through New Media, he challenged assumptions about materiality, process, and form that had traditionally defined the medium, long before digital art, NFTs, or AI-generated imagery existed.
From 2002 - 2007 Peter Zimmermann was Professor at the Kunsthochschule für Medien, Köln, Germany.
