Exhibition Outline
Proposed by: Renée Pfister on behalf of Peter Zimmermann.
Rationale & Current Relevance
The ‘Information Age’ also called the ‘Computer Age’, the ‘Digital Age’ and the ‘New Media Age’, commenced in the mid-20th Century marking a rapid transition in our working and personal life. This was brought about by technological advancements and the advent of personal computers. Peter Zimmermann was at the centre of these high-tech innovations, which provided him with an opportunity to revolutionise ‘The Way of Seeing and Experiencing’ abstract painting in a groundbreaking way.
The first conceptual painting was created by Maholy-Nagy in 1922, where he instructed another person over the phone to paint a picture for him. In contrast, Zimmermann examined ‘New Media’, he deconstructed images and film stills beyond their origins, birthing a new visual vernacular. During this exploration he produced carton and poster installations, along with painted book covers until he started to work with resin, a substance with the ability to change from a liquid into solid, homogeneous state. This newfound material encouraged him to leave traditional methods behind, making paintings with a sleek contemporary twist that speaks to our modern notion of sublime.
Nowadays, we have also artists engaging in augmented and virtual reality, NFTs and AI generated art. However, ‘New Media’ allowed Zimmermann to express his ideas and skills in pioneering modes, demonstrating his ability to re-invent and innovate ‘painting’.
From 2002 - 2007 Peter Zimmermann was Professor at the Kunsthochschule für Medien, Köln, Germany.
