This year, we selected the painting Land Ahoy by Brazilian artist Ana Herter for our seasonal greetings.
At first glance, Herter’s painting evokes a calm and idyllic atmosphere, an impression that is ultimately misleading. Beneath its beauty and serenity lie far more serious observations. Herter is deeply concerned with the destruction of nature throughout Brazil, particularly in the Amazon region, and the profound impact this has on its communities. The ongoing deforestation has significant consequences, including the release of greenhouse gases, a decline in rainfall, and the potential to push the ecosystem toward a tipping point creating long periods of droughts and floods.
