The Joy of What We Do #22

Share

In May 2018, I  discussed with Dylan his exhibition Rituals of Tourism during a talk & walk to different locations in Watchet and at the Contains Art gallery, Somerset. Dylan and I, we debated the impact of Oscar Hansen’s "Open Form" post-war theory on architecture, urban planning, experimental film and visual arts along with the studies on “Carnivalesque”, by Mikhail Bakhtin.  Both  viewpoints  continue to influence artists and architects who regard their practice as a form of social experimentation.

Dylan Fox referenced both thinkers in his art practice, through his participatory works and installations which emphasise the creative role of the viewer as a co-author and the idea of democratisation of art. Rituals of Tourism also focused on another central theme: the social, physical and emotional aspects of gender transition, a reflection of Fox’s personal experience as a transgender man.
