The Joy of What We Do #29 'Collections Idiosyncrasies'

Share

Museums, private and corporate collections differ in their nature. They vary from art to antiquities collections, natural to scientific specimens, and include industrial and design collections.

The collection priorities of museums, the taste and interest of collectors, and the business ethos and ambitions change over time. Collections are also an account of changing artistic tastes and collecting priorities; they record social and political alliances and indicate economic and market conditions.

From my experience, regardless of which collections I have been involved in over the years, I always have come across some idiosyncrasies, where I asked myself: why has this item entered the depository? Whatever the reasons, certain objects simply make you smile! Today's collectable is a car park signage I found at the Science Museum while walking through some of the storage rooms.
