The Power of Art #109 David Bartlett ‘Green Interior’

Share

It is a place where we live with our families and pets, as well as meet friends. In this safe haven, important life events take place, allowing us to build relationships and create memories. Our dwellings are more than just four walls and a place to eat and sleep; they are the primary connection between us and the rest of the world. Collectively, most of us cherish our home, regardless of size or locality,  but  also in the wider context of life on Planet Earth.

‘Green Interior 2,’ by David Bartlett, is dedicated to the theme of ‘Home.’ On a formal level, the painting combines the spatial organisation of interior and exterior components with the  flatness of the picture plane. The cameo elements comprise an electric light, spider plant, clock, pictures, and the artist’s palette, all hanging on the wall, encapsulating a visual metaphor and personal narrative.  The centrally placed, towering curtain interconnects the green interior and darker blue/green exterior beyond.

According to Bartlett, the painting also offers a  layered and symbolic meaning,  in the attempt to draw attention to the interconnectedness of mankind and nature -  the web of life. It alludes to the critical need for mankind to transition to a sustainable, carbon-neutral world, as a matter of urgency. Overall, the painting has a sort of flickering energy suggestive of the quantum world of atoms, quarks, and ‘stardust’ basis to life.
