The Power of Art #114 Charley Peters ‘Digital Imagination’

Share

Charley Peters makes paintings where abstract language and screen aesthetics collide, remixing familiar motifs from art history, retro gaming, and internet culture on canvases and in the public realm. Her work considers our relationship with painting in the contemporary world, seeing it as an expanded practice that is equally physical and virtual and not always limited to the surface of the canvas. Although essentially abstract, Peters’ paintings remind us of aspects of our real world, plotting a transition in our ways of seeing from the once-radical non-representation of high modernism to the everyday pixellated images seen on screens.

“Hold On A Second, Gotta Get Me Some Of That” is part of a new series of paintings on canvas that have developed through Peters’ conversations with an AI text-to-image generator - translating the digital ‘imagination’ of AI into painted artworks made by the artist.
