Electric Lullaby presents ten segments of electroencephalographic (EEG) lines in a gradient of colours, corresponding to episodes from wake to sleep, from reasoning to deep unconsciousness, and from fantasy to dream. The installation is a site-specific commission suspended over the staircase of a private residence. The physical walkway from daytime living space to night-time bedrooms is altered into a visionary stroll, a parallel journey of the mind, reminiscent of our circadian rhythm.
Maria Teresa Ortoleva is an Italian artist based in London, whose research-based practice traverses science, data visualisation and mental health. Appropriating graphic notations from various disciplines, found illustrations, fragments of books and digital databases, she experiments with data visualisation, urban science and the scientific imagery of the human mind.
Over the past three years, she examined data of EEG records, i.e. brain activities and diagrammatic drawings. Heterogeneous graphic representations are transformed into immersive installations, mapping everyday surroundings with colourful visualisations of our inner mindscape. Ortoleva is a Kings Artist in Residence in the department of Informatics at King's College London.
