The Power of Art #57 Nicola Anthony 'Sculpture In Words'

Share

She likes to dig beneath the surface to find voices which are often forgotten, erased, or omitted. To gather stories, she borrows methodologies from the disciplines of linguistics, evolutionary biology, horology, anthropology, and even data mining.

Revealing the inner worlds of people from different walks of life, this series explores the human condition and threads of commonalities despite our differences. These eight sculptures were commissioned by Singapore Art Museum for a solo exhibition in 2017. To make these pieces Anthony worked with disenfranchised communities to understand and share their stories in a personal interview. These groups included inmates of Changi Women’s Prison, children managing chronic and terminal illness, families dealing with addiction, and the elderly community. She also included members of the public by inviting story contributions at www.humanarchiveproject.com (ongoing).
