The Power of Art #79 Shuster & Moseley - 'Opened onto the Inside of a Star' - Royal Academy Summer Show 2022

Share

We continue with another artwork included in the RA Summer Show, a sculpture by Shuster & Moseley, made of precision-cut, bevelled and hand-bonded optical glass.  According to the artists: "This diamond prism form derived from the process of abstracting and deconstructing prismatic geometries that are then counter-balanced through technical engineering to find a moment of poise that is a confluence between stasis and dynamism; a balance that holds open a space for the alchemy of light.”

It is a well-known fact that the way light travels through the atmosphere makes stars appear to twinkle, while the light from planets appears to hold steady.  Shuster & Moseley’s sculpture most certainly provides a captivating representation where space and light blur the boundary between the object and its atmosphere.  What stands out is not only the technical accuracy and mastery, but also the internal abstraction of light and the external reflection of light these prisms create. This can be observed when walking around the sculpture. It is joy to experience these spectral rays of colour.
